2020-02-13
Description
With the increasing prevalence of multicore processors, shared-memory programming models are essential. OpenMP is a popular, portable, widely supported, and easy-to-use shared-memory model.Since its advent in 1997, the OpenMP programming model has proved to be a key driver behind parallel programming for shared-memory architectures. Its powerful and flexible programming model has allowed researchers from various domains to enable parallelism in their applications. Over the more than two decades of its existence, OpenMP has tracked the evolution of hardware and the complexities of software to ensure that it stays as relevant to today's high performance computing community as it was in 1997.This workshop will cover a wide range of topics, reaching from the basics of OpenMP programming using the "OpenMP Common Core" to really advanced topics. During each day lectures will be mixed with hands-on sessions on the LRZ system IvyMUC.

2020-03-12
Description
Many of today's high-end HPC systems are equipped with GPUs. This is true for smaller clusters, Tier-0 and Pre-Exascale systems alike. Using modern GPUs can significantly improve the computational performance achieved. Making use of these resources will be even more crucial in the future as the trend towards GPUs will in all likelihood continue. GPUs are currently becoming mainstream within the Exascale Computing Project in the US. In this PRACE Winter School participants shall be provided with the necessary skills and tools to efficiently use GPUs in their daily work. The school addresses participants from all scientific fields. They will be taught the necessary programming paradigms and be guided to write correct and efficient code for GPUs. They will also learn how to port existing code to use GPU acceleration. The course includes many hands-on exercises so that the learned concepts can be applied immediately. In addition, several invited speakers with different backgrounds will report on successfully porting their scientific applications to GPUs.The PRACE Winter School 2020 will host about 30-45 researchers with an interest in GPU computing. Case studies and hands-on tutorials form an integral part of the school. The computational resources necessary to conduct the exercises will be provided in form of a GPU cluster at the University of Innsbruck, which will be reserved for exclusive usage for the participants of the school. This will be augmented by a second batch of GPUs from VSC-3, a cluster located at the national centre of supercomputing in Austria, with likewise exclusive reservation for the entire period of the school.

Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing Conference

|
PASC20
Place Geneva , CH
|
Start Date End Date
2020-06-29
|
2020-07-01
Description
PASC20 is the seventh edition of the PASC Conference series, an international platform for the exchange of competences in scientific computing and computational science, with a strong focus on methods, tools, algorithms, application challenges, and novel techniques and usage of high performance computing. The theme is "New Challenges, New Computing Paradigms". Computational science is crucially important across diverse research communities from traditional topics in physics and chemistry to new applications in life and social sciences. The drive to exascale computing, together with new computational paradigms in machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data present opportunities for science and society but also significant challenges for both traditional HPC and the new user communities. This growing community requires increased computing power, new heterogeneous architecture paradigms, new software and new policies for resource access while benchmarks like High-Performance Linpack are becoming less and less representative of the computing ecosystems. Although new hardware solutions are emerging, computers become fatter, not faster, and exploiting the coming exascale systems remains a challenge for many traditional HPC applications.PASC20 aims to open discussions on these new challenges, explore problems and propose solutions to address them and shape the future of scientific computing.
